Noted lyricist
Javed Akhtars prodigious son Farhaan has attempted to pioneer
a new sensibilities in Bollywood cinema with his debut flick Dil
Chahta Hai.
Apart from its
yuppie look the film stands out because of its colorful cast that
includes Aamir Khan, Saif Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta and
Dimple Kapadia. Farhaan has penned a convincing script in which
he has devolved every character in a different way but kept the
story uni-directional.
Dil
Chahta Hai is the story of three friends Akash (Aamir) Sameer
(Saif) and Siddhart (Akshaye Khanna). Although friends they, are
three distinct characters. Each has his own view of life, career
and love.
Akash, for instance,
does not believe much in love and has a very carefree attitude towards
life. Easy-come-easy-go is his credo. Even his close
friend Shalini (Preity Zinta) keeps bickering about his non-belief
in platonic love.
Sameer
(Saif), on the other hand is very much in love and at no cost willing
to hurt the sentiments of the girl in his life. He is an emotional
character who wears his heart on his sleeve but doesnt have
a clear view of life.
Siddhart (Akshaye)
is the most mature and quiet of the three. He is observing in nature,
lets out his emotions on a painting canvas and seems to have a deep
understanding of life. Sid, as his friends fondly call him, is enamored
with a lonely divorcee Tara Jaiswal (Dimple Kapadia). But for Tara
her work and her daughter are her be-all and end-all.
The
film explores the ways in which the relation between this medley
of characters develops. How well the three friends groove in with
each other. And what changes come in their lives and their camaraderie
with the coming of three women -- Shalini, Puja (Sonali Kulkarni),
and Tara.
Dil Chahta
Hai has some good performances from its star cast. Aamir shows
his command over facial expressions and swinging of moods to the
hilt and Preity slips into the shoes of a modern (and emotional)
gal with agility. And Saif too evens the score with his a-little-romantic
and a-little-comic act.
Surprisingly
Akshaye Khanna steals the show with his resisted performance in
which he says much by keeping quiet. While Sonali Kulkarni has been
relegated to a marginal role Dimple cuts a dash with her imposing
presence.
The film has
a very different music from Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy trio. And its sync
sound technique (in which there is no dubbing and dialogues are
recorded while acting) further enhances the performances of its
cast.
